Our Community
At the heart of MAYA are the parents that join us for class. Each parent makes a unique contribution to our community of learning, advocacy, and support. MAYA exists to bridge the gaps - gaps in knowledge, power, community, and compassion. We bridge the gap in order to make birth more equitable. Our community is made of parents of color, who suffer disproportionately from maternal and infant mortality and morbidity; non-English-speaking latinx parents; single parents; parents in recovery or active addiction; parents of limited resources; and all parents in search of a community where they are accepted, heard, and lifted up.
Our Community Gives Back
After participating in our classes and doula services, parents want to support and empower others. We are thrilled to have completed our first Community Internship Training, in which program participants trained to become community-based mentors and are on the road to becoming community-based doulas. You can now find these amazing parents teaching MAYA classes and providing prenatal and postpartum support to new parents.
